In Between

In Between is a participatory design project exploring hybrid identity and belonging among first-generation Syrian immigrants in Sweden. The project challenges dominant narratives of assimilation and instead frames cultural in-betweenness as a lived condition and a potential strength.

Grounded in interviews, storytelling and collaborative workshops, the project investigates how identity is negotiated in everyday life across languages, cultures and social contexts. Rather than speaking about participants, the project was developed with them, positioning their voices, experiences and reflections as the core content.

The main outcome is a bilingual magazine (Arabic / Swedish) that functions both as a research artifact and a public-facing design object. The publication documents personal narratives, memories and reflections, creating space for recognition, dialogue and shared understanding.
